After 35 years of living in the same place, doing the same things, seeing the same people – I decided it was time to make a change. I moved from a small town outside of Detroit, MI to Atlanta, GA. What a jump! The move went smoothly at first, but I had to return to MI for a family event in January. My three kids, my mate and I drove our little car to Michigan from Georgia, which was wonderful, but on the way back to GA, the problems began…
Everybody knows that you always obey the speed limit in Ohio, no matter where you’re going and how fast you need to be there, Ohio is the state to take your time in. So, we did that. We got through MI just fine, it was dark out, but we knew the route, so no problem. The kids were half asleep and we were traveling along I75. Of course the 18-wheelers were everywhere, speeding along as if this trip was an everyday event for them. There is a stretch along I75 that turns into a two-lane road with the same amount of traffic as a five-lane highway. There is a huge ditch alongside the left lane of traffic and a stretch of trees and scenery on the right. We traveled the left lane to keep a steady pace and to stay out of the way of the big rigs.
While traveling about 60mph, there is suddenly something in the middle of the lane that we are traveling in, there are two trucks traveling alongside us; the ditch on the left; and cars closing in fast from behind. What do we do? Well, the object did not seem that big, so instead of winding up in the ditch or causing a pile up on the freeway, we hit the object. We could not see exactly what it was, but it seemed to be about the size of a canister that you would probably keep sugar in at home. We were in a relatively small car, a Ford Focus, but we figured we could get over the object. Upon making contact with the object, it made a horrifying noise. It sounded like a serving spoon getting caught in the garbage disposal, then silence. The kids are awake and screaming. Okay, we thought, horrible sound, but we must’ve broken whatever it was and smashed it up, there was debris flying around in the street behind us. Then, about two minutes later, our speed began to break down rapidly 60mph down to about 20mph in about two minutes. The engine light popped on and the car started to rattle like crazy. By now, of course, everyone in the car is afraid and some crying trying to figure out what happened.
Well, we pull over and the car just dies out. We cannot restart
